Hi dear friend:
If you are reading this article, you are probably struggling with inflammation or wondering how you can use turmeric to ease inflammation.
As some of you may know I suffer from morning joint stiffness due to a condition called osteoarthritis. I realized that my body could not digest as easily certain food, especially dairy and gluten, and also that what I ate affected my emotions. This is why I have adapted my healthy diet as part of an early treatment to decrease pain and live a healthier life. This includes the use of turmeric to reduce inflammation.
What causes inflammation?
When our body is trying to protect us from harmful stimuli, such as damaged cells, irritants or pathogens, inflammation takes place. It is our body trying to heal!
According to Webmd.com “When inflammation occurs, chemicals from the body’s white blood cells are released into the blood or affected tissues to protect your body from foreign substances. This release of chemicals increases the blood flow to the area of injury or infection and may result in redness and warmth. Some of the chemicals cause a leak of fluid into the tissues, resulting in swelling. This protective process may stimulate nerves and cause pain.”
“Junk diets + sedentary lifestyle have created a situation where “today’s adults are so unhealthy that they are, in every sense, 15 years older than their parents and grandparents were at the same age” Hulsegge et a, Eur J Prev Cardio ’13
And though inflammation is part of our body´s healing process, reducing it is important to prevent several diseases and conditions.
What has helped me reduce inflammation:
Turmeric
Turmeric is a spice widely used in India, not only to prepare food but also as a great disinfectant, and in the treatment of diabetes. Turmeric is a member of the ginger family, the Curcuma longa plant.
I have started using Turmeric for its anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and specifically when dealing with a fatty liver. This spice helps to increase the production of enzymes in the liver, the organ that helps eliminate toxins in the body.
It is the active ingredient in turmeric, curcumin is an antioxidant that has anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric helps conditions such as: muscle sprains, arthritis, and IBS. There is some evidence that it can help prevent or slow cancer growth and especially that it protects against liver disease.

How to use turmeric:
Part of my diet includes drinking ginger lemon tea every morning with a tablespoon of turmeric. In addition, I make sure to have a good ratio of Omega 6/3 essential fatty acids.
I first started taking one tablespoon with a bit of pepper which helps activate the properties of turmeric, dissolved in a glass of water. Nowadays I add a tablespoon of turmeric to my ginger lemon tea and a bit of baking soda. Adding turmeric to my ginger tea was a suggestion of my Homeopath and it has helped me greatly.
If you are like my own, then you will be glad to know that turmeric can also be bought as a supplement! It is also one of the seasonings in Indian food, so go ahead and sprinkle a bit on your food. Just keep in mind that the optimal amount per day is one tablespoon.
Food that helps reduce inflammation:
In addition to turmeric, there are other health supplements and food that have helped me when dealing with inflammation, such as: ginger, garlic, Omega 3 oil, vitamin C.
Conclusion
As someone suffering from inflammation I know how bothersome it can be. Knowing the risks of chronic inflammation makes me even more aware of the importance of eating healthy. I hope that you are also inspired to add turmeric to your diet if you suffer from inflammation.
Warning: Consult your physician before taking supplements or you start a dietary regimen. Turmeric consumed in large quantities can act adversely when taken with other medications or treatments.
I hope these words of my personal experience with the use of turmeric will inspire you to add this spice to your diet and that you find this post useful.
